You can find more capable scanners, but not at this price. That's significantly faster than the LiDE 25, largely because the LiDE 60 uses a USB 2.0 connection instead of the cheaper scanner's USB 1.1 interface. Scanning at 600 ppi for printing at 8-by-10 took 1:21. We timed the LiDE 60 at 11 to 12 seconds for prescanning the entire flatbed, and 12 to 15 seconds for scanning 4-by-6 photos at 300 ppi.

By default these scan to ArcSoft PhotoStudio, your e-mail program, a searchable PDF file, or your printer. For one-touch scanning, a scan-control utility offers eight customizable onscreen scan buttons, and you'll find four physical buttons on the scanner's front panel.

Its driver offers a choice between a simple interface for easy scanning and an advanced interface with more control. OmniPage also makes it easy to scan additional pages into the same file, one at a time, helping make up for the lack of an ADF.Įase of use is a strong point with the LiDE 60. It managed to read both our Times New Roman and Arial font test pages at 8 points without mistakes. The bundled ScanSoft OmniPage SE 2.0 is the light version of one the better OCR programs on the market. The scanner's good rating for OCR is very nearly as high as it can be without an automatic document feeder (ADF). In our tests, it worked without problems with the bundled photo editor, ArcSoft PhotoStudio 5.5. There's also a batch-scan option that lets you scan multiple photos in a single scan and turn each one into a separate file, saving time and effort. The dust and scratch removal feature managed to tone down dust specks considerably, but had little to no benefit for scratches. In particular, the color-restoration feature succeeded in bringing a faded photo back to life, and the backlight correction did a good job of bringing out details in dark areas without losing significant detail in light areas.

In addition to providing reasonable, if not terrific, photo-scan quality, the LiDE 60 Twain driver offers several highly welcome features for improving photo scans.

The scanner lost white-on-white details in bright areas, and it showed some minor posterization in skin tones on one photo, changing shading suddenly in areas that should change gradually. On our tests, photo-scan quality was good enough for reprinting as snapshots to hand out to friends and family, but not quite good enough for serious amateurs. Like the LiDE 25, the LiDE 60 claims a maximum optical resolution of 1,200 pixels per inch (ppi), which is more than enough for photos or scanning text for OCR. But it also offers a few extras, most notably faster speed, which is enough to make it a much better fit for a home office than the LiDE 25, as well as a good choice for home use. It offers all the same features (and many of the same limitations), including a software bundle limited to a scan-control utility, a low-end photo editor, and a special-edition (read: light-version) optical-character recognition program. The Canon CanoScan LiDE 60 ($79.99 direct) is one step up from Canon's most basic home scanner, the Canon CanoScan LiDE 25. Best Malware Removal and Protection Software.
